Before respiratory protection products can be lawfully used within an occupational environment anywhere in the United States, they must meet the requirements set by a government agency called the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). NIOSH must certify any respirator or respiratory protective product before it can be used in any workplace: medical, industrial, educational, etc. The regulation that empowers NIOSH to regulate and certify respiratory protective products is 42 CFR Part 84. By that same authority, NIOSH develops numerous standard test methods for evaluating the performance of respiratory PPE. NIOSH tests products to these standards at the government laboratory that it works in concert with, the National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL), before doing extensive QA and QC reviews before certifying (or “approving”) a product for use.

ICS Laboratories provides independent accredited pre-submittal testing to NIOSH standard test procedures. Pre-certification test data is required by NIOSH as part of their approval process for respiratory protective equipment.  ICS has continually demonstrated competence to perform testing to the 75+ NIOSH test methods listed on its ISO/IEC scope of accreditation issued by the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation.  Our experienced staff works closely with NIOSH, ensuring that the most appropriate and effective testing is conducted.
